Representation of information for musicology
This paper outlines issues surrounding notions of ‘postmodern musicology’ and ‘digital musicology’, specifically with reference to concepts of information. I draw on a historical perspective of the nature and role of computationally generated representations of information used as musicological knowledge. This perspective frames examples of computationally generated representations of different kinds of musical information. Information as a measure of the efficiency of knowledge-generation from science adds another dimension to a discussion of the uses information (in its conventional and scientific senses) can be put to in the shaping and description of contemporary musicology
